Jean de Brunhoff was born in 1899 in Paris, France. he attended the Ecole Alsacienne and studied painting with Othon Friesz. He was a painter, author and illustrator of books for children. He created the "Babar" books, which were about a civilized elephant. He died in 1937, but his son Laurent continued the series, beginning in 1945 when he began to paint seriously.
